State Accreditation Program

In 2016, Chicago Marathi Vidya Mandir achieved a significant milestone by obtaining state accreditation in Illinois, a testament to the relentless and dedicated efforts led by Vidya Joshi and the school's teachers. Their commitment and hard work emphasized the institution's dedication to upholding high standards and delivering quality education in Marathi language, culture, history, and art to the students.

This accreditation created opportunities for students of Chicago Marathi Vidyamandir to qualify for the Seal of Biliteracy as seniors in Illinois State High Schools. In 2023, through the strenuous efforts of Vidya Joshi and her dedicated team, including Suwarna Ganpule, Abhishek Sohani, Sulakshana Kulkarni, and under the leadership of Vaidehi Deshpande, the school successfully integrated the Seal of Biliteracy in all high schools. Students can engage in Portfolio Management and meet Marathi exam standards by taking exams with the high school they attend, ultimately receiving the Seal of Biliteracy on their College Transcripts from Illinois State High School, recognizing their high proficiency in Marathi.

Chicago area has a long history of Marathi Shala but those efforts were limited to smaller groups by visionaries like Late Dr. Ushatai Mahisekar and Ashwini Modak. This effort by MMC is commendable and very encouraging. I served as a Trustee of the school in first few years just making sure that the initiative runs smoothly. BMM has provided a curriculum designed by Bharati Vidyapeeth, Pune.

Here are the steps for students to achieve the Seal of Biliteracy:

  • Enrollment and BMM Exams: Students enroll and successfully clear BMM Level 1 to Level 5 Exams facilitated by Chicago Marathi Vidya Mandir.
  • Notifying CMV-Shala Coordinator: Students express their interest in obtaining the Bi-Literacy Seal to the CMV-Shala Coordinator via email, providing necessary details.
  • Initiating the Process: CMV-Shala Coordinator initiates an email with a Letter of Recommendation to the Director of World Languages/ELL at their respective high school, including required student and parent information, with the involvement of Chicago Marathi Vidya Mandir's accreditation lead, Vidya Joshi.
  • Alta Assessment Exam: Students register and successfully clear the Alta Assessment Exam, a paid exam administered at Stevenson High School.
  • Creating a Portfolio: Vidya Joshi and Vaidehi Deshpande assist students in collaborating with the Director of World Languages/ELL at their respective high school to create a portfolio comprising Alta W/S scores and evidence of completion of BMM Level 1 to Level 5 exams. An English component qualification is also required.
  • Awarding the Seal of Biliteracy: The district awards the Seal of Biliteracy upon the successful completion of the process.
